                Oleander saplings mark Hiroshima bombing anniversary in Delhi

                To mark the 70th anniversary of the 1945 Hiroshima bombing, and as a show of solidarity with its victims, members of civil society and school children in Delhi planted as many as 70 oleander flower saplings, seen as a symbol of life after the bombing of the Japanese city. The saplings were planted at the famous Lodhi Garden in the heart of Delhi. It was a joint effort by the horticulture department of the New Delhi Municipal Council and the "Green Circle of Delhi", an organization promoting tree planting in the Indian capital. The oleander was the first flower to blossom in the atomic-scorched earth of Hiroshima. The flower gave hope and strength to the people of Hiroshima for rebuilding their lives and was a source of inspiration for the reconstruction of their city. Suhas Borker, the founding member of the "Green Circle of Delhi" said that the planting of oleander saplings was an attempt to show solidarity with the victims of the 1945 atomic bombing in Japan. "We organized the program to express our solidarity with citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and with the simple message to the youth of Delhi that the atomic bombing should never, never be repeated again anywhere in the world," he added. Also present on the occasion was India's former ambassador to Japan (from 1988 to 1992) Arjun Asrani. He said the oleander flower was the first to bloom in Hiroshima city after 1945 bombings, thereby raising hope for life. "Oleander flower is closely related with Hiroshima. So, in order to mark the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, the members of civil society in the Indian capital decided to plant 70 saplings as a show of sympathy and solidarity with the thousands of sufferers in Hiroshima, who suffered like none else in the history of mankind," he said. ==Kyodo
