STORYLINE:
Commuters are now returning to Mumbai local trains, nearly two years after the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a virtual abandonment of the country's largest suburban transport network.
Latest statistics show that the average daily ridership of Mumbai local trains has exceeded 6 million, which is the highest since the COVID-19 outbreak.
The pre-COVID ridership was around 8 million a day.
Daily ridership on the Mumbai suburban network once fell to about 1 to 1.5 million or even lower, after the country was hit by COVID-19 in early 2020 and imposed pandemic control restrictions.
