Sumo ass'n selects woman dramatist to yokozuna council

TOKYO, Japan - The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) on Sept. 12 named popular playwright Makiko Uchidate (shown in this file photo) to the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, which oversees the promotion of wrestlers to sumo's highest rank. Uchidate is the first woman to be selected to the advisory body of the JSA.

          TOKYO, Japan - Michiko Kihara (file photo), who swam for Japan at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and became a popular television personality, died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture on Oct. 18. Kihara assumed the post of director of the Japan Swimming Federation in 2005, coached swimming and contributed to the promotion of masters swimming.

She was 87. Saruhashi is known as the founder of the ''Saruhashi Award'' to honor female scientists up to the age of 49 for outstanding research.

While Itochu chairman, Sejima played a major role in privatizing Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corp. and the Japan National Railways as a member of the government's commission on administrative reform. He was also known for his close ties with former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.

Kumai won acclaim both at home and abroad for ''Sandakan Hachiban Shokan Bokyo (Sandakan No. 8)'' in 1974, a film depicting the tragedy of a woman who worked as a prostitute in Sandakan, Borneo, before World War II.
