Settlement Growth in the Nile Delta - Egypt

Handout Photomontage shows Settlement Growth in the Nile Delta. The United Nations’ World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 was published on 17 November 2025. Drawing on data from the Joint Research Centre’s Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), developed under the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), the report tracks changes in population distribution across more than 12,000 urban settlements. It highlights a global shift in settlement patterns, with the majority of the world’s population now living in urban areas. This image, created with GHSL data, focuses on the Nile Delta in Egypt, one of the world’s most densely populated regions. By comparing estimates of built-up surface at three points in time, it shows how the extent of urban development has changed between 1975 and 2025, along with projections for 2075. Using satellite data and national census inputs, GHSL provides a broad range of data on human settlements worldwide, including estimates of built-up surfaces per square kilometre and, at even

Residents Stranded as Yamuna River Floods Rise

Flood-affected residents of a low-lying area stand on their rooftop on the banks of the Yamuna River in Prayagraj, India, on August 3, 2025, as water levels rise following continuous monsoon rains. The annual monsoon season brings critical rainfall to northern India, but also triggers frequent flooding, especially in vulnerable low-lying regions. Rising river levels force families to seek shelter on rooftops or evacuate their homes. The floods disrupt daily life, damage property, and pose health risks due to waterborne diseases and lack of clean water. Local authorities often struggle to provide timely relief and evacuation assistance. Scenes like this reflect the ongoing challenges of climate vulnerability and urban planning in flood-prone zones, highlighting the human cost of extreme weather patterns intensified by climate change. Boatmen row a boat near a partially submerged helipad on the banks of the Yamuna River in Prayagraj, India, on August 3, 2025, as water levels rise following days of heavy monsoon rains. Seasonal flooding along India's major rivers often disrupts infrastructure, submerges roads and low-lying areas, and forces local residents to adapt their routines. The partially flooded helipad illustrates the extent of the overflow, as water encroaches upon critical infrastructure. Small boats become an essential mode of transport and livelihood for those living along the riverbanks. The image reflects the resilience of communities in flood-prone regions, where annual monsoon patterns bring both vital water resources and the looming threat of displacement or property loss. Tension Rises As Soldiers Disrupt Funeral - Palestine

Mourners gather in Umm al-Khair, a village in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank, on July 29, 2025, during the funeral of Awdah Adhaleen, a 31-year-old Palestinian English teacher and father of three, who was shot and killed by Yinon Levi, a settler accused of multiple acts of violence and sanctioned by European authorities. The funeral is interrupted by Israeli soldiers, who disperse mourners and prevent journalists from documenting the event. Family members, including cousin Alaa Hadhaleen, 26, who records the confrontation while wearing a black t-shirt, attempt to continue the burial rites despite the escalating tension. The incident reflects broader patterns of violence and restriction in Masafer Yatta, an area facing ongoing settler expansion and military enforcement. The community mourns under surveillance, denied space for grief in a region marked by decades of conflict and occupation. Photo by Khadija Toufik/Middle East Images/ABACAPRESS.COM
