Obuchi wins LDP election
Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi was elected president of
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Friday July 24 to succeed
outgoing Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. The photo shows Obuchi
taking a bow after LDP parliamentarians and representatives of 47 LDP
prefectural chapters elected him on the first ballot over his two
rivals, former Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiroku Kajiyama and Health
and Welfare Minister Junichiro Koizumi. At left is Koizumi.
