Diet panel adopts Japan-U.S. defense bills
Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi (C) and other cabinet ministers
express thanks April 26 after a key panel of the House of
Representatives approves a set of bills aimed at facilitating defense
cooperation with the United States in the event of crises near Japan.
The bills are certain to be approved by the full lower house April 27
-- ahead of Obuchi's summit meeting with U.S. President Bill Clinton
in Washington on May 3.
