MOX cargo ship enters Niigata port for rehearsal
KASHIWAZAKI, Japan - A British cargo ship capable of carrying a plutonium fuel mix enters a port in Niigata Prefecture along the Sea of Japan on Aug. 2. The 5,050-ton Pacific Sandpiper arrived to rehearse the shipment of mixed oxide (MOX) fuel to a nuclear power plant in the prefecture, planned to start in 2000. The ship, owned by British Nuclear Fuels PLC, docked at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa port without any cargo on board.
