First Japan-U.S. sister city conference opens in Sendai

SENDAI, Japan - The first meeting of the Japan-U.S. Sister City Conference opens in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, on Sept. 10. The two-day meeting was attended by some 400 officials from 109 local governments in Japan and the United States. Among those attending were Thomas Foley, ambassador to Japan, Shoichiro Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corp.'s honorary chairman, and other political and business leaders.

Maglev train makes test run

TOKYO, Japan - Business leaders from Japan and the United States begin full-fledged discussions on the information, manufacturing and service industries July 10 at a hotel in Tokyo. The three-day ''37th Japan-U.S. Business Conference'' began Sunday. Among the issues under discussion are the lowering of interconnection fees charged by telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., a dispute over dumping charges made by U.S. steelmakers against Japanese steel manufacturers and the early creation of an environment in Japan suitable for an information technology network.

Toyota mulls closing Prizm assembly lines in U.S.

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. is considering closing assembly lines for the Prizm model at the Fremont, CA plant of New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture with General Motors Corp. of the United States, due to weak sales of the model in the U.S., company officials said in Nagoya on Aug. 14. About 45,000 Prizm subcompact cars were assembled last year.
