Muslim leader Wahid sworn in as Indonesian president
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Abdurrahman Wahid, leader of the 40-million-strong Indonesian Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), was sworn in as the fourth Indonesian president on Oct. 20 at the People's Consultative Assembly, only hours after being elected by the highest constitutional body. He defeated his presidential rival Megawati Sukarnoputri in the assembly's vote.
