Tajik gov't persuasion key to hostage release

BISHKEK, Oct. 22 Kyodo - Kyrgyz soldiers stand on guard in a southern Kyrgyzstan area bordering on Tajikistan on Oct. 22. The road leads to Dzhirgatal, northern Tajikistan, a base of the Islamic armed rebels who have been holding four Japanese mining engineers hostage since late August.

NARITA, Japan - Four Japanese mining engineers who were freed after being held hostage for two months by Islamic rebels in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan meet the press at Narita airport, east of Tokyo, on Oct. 26, after arriving from the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek. 4 Japanese, 1 Kyrgyz hostage released

KARAMYK, Kyrgyzstan - Japanese mining engineers Toshiaki Ariie (L) and Nobuhisa Nakajima (R), who had been abducted by Islamic rebels, arrived in Karamyk in southern Kyrgyzstan on Oct. 25, along with two other Japanese and a Kyrgyz hostage shortly after the two men were released. Ariie, 58, and Nakajima, 49, were abducted in the Batken district in southern Kyrgyzstan on Aug. 23 together with two other Japanese mining engineers and three Kyrgyz. Two of the three Kyrgyz were freed earlier.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - This photo, taken Oct. 25 in Bishkek, shows Kyrgyz interpreter Omurbek Zhanakeev, who was freed along with four Japanese mining engineers on Oct. 24 after being held hostage for two months by Islamic rebels in Central Asia. Kyrgyz-born Zhanakeev, 35, started learning Japanese in Moscow while studying mining. He stayed in Japan for a year from September 1993. After returning to Kyrgyzstan, he participated in establishing a Japanese culture center and the compiling of a Kyrgyz-Japanese dictionary.

Hostage-takers demand release of 50,000 comrades

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Muslim guerrillas holding a group of hostages in southern Kyrgyzstan, including four Japanese mining engineers, are demanding the release of 50,000 comrades held in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz sources said on Sept. 4.
