Design of Japan's new 2,000-yen bill

TOKYO, Japan - The front (above) of the new 2,000-yen bill features an illustration of the Shureimon Gate in Naha, a symbol of Okinawa Prefecture, while the reverse shows a scene from the 1,000-year-old literary classic ''The Tale of Genji'' and a portrait of its author, Murasaki Shikibu. The bill, unveiled Oct. 29, will be issued in time for the summit of the G-8 nations in Okinawa next July.

          NAHA, Japan - Economic Planning Agency chief Taichi Sakaiya (C) and other people hold replicas of the new 2,000-yen note in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, on July 19 in an event marking the issue of the banknote held in front of the Shureimon Gate, which is featured on the bill. The Bank of Japan issued the new note to commemorate the year 2000 and the Group of Eight (G-8) summit in Okinawa.

            TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Finance Ministry on May 8 begins printing 2,000 yen banknotes at its Takinogawa plant in Tokyo's Kita Ward. The new bills, issued to commemorate the summit of the Group of Eight nations in Okinawa Prefecture on July 21-23, feature an illustration of the Shureimon Gate in Naha, considered a symbol of the prefecture. The bills will be put into circulation July 19.

              TOKYO, Japan - The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan announced April 21 that 2,000-yen banknotes will be issued for the first time July 19. The photo, taken April 21, shows the obverse side (top) featuring Shureimon Gate in Naha, considered a symbol of Okinawa Prefecture, and the reverse side (bottom), portraying a scene from ''The Tale of Genji,'' a Japanese novel written nearly 1,000 years ago. The latest antiforgery technology is used in the printing of the new bills.

                TOKYO, Japan - Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa shows on Oct. 29 the design of a 2,000 yen bill which will be issued by July next year to mark the year 2000. The front of the bill depicts the Shureimon gates of Shuri Castle on the outskirts of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. The other side depicts a scene from the ''Tale of Genji,'' the Japanese classic written in the early 11th century by court lady Murasaki Shikibu.

                  The Osaka International Convention Center, which cost 70 billion yen to build, is struggling to invite conferences after losing a bid to host the July 2000 summit of the Group of Eight (G-8) nations to Okinawa.                     Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi makes a policy speech on Japan's relations with Southeast Asian countries in Hanoi on Dec. 16 at a lecture program hosted by a Hanoi-based research institute, ahead of summit talks with leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China and South Korea. In the speech, Obuchi unveiled a plan to provide special yen loans worth 600 billion yen to troubled Asian countries over a three-year period as part of an effort to revitalize the region's economy.
