Commemorative coins for emperor's reign to be issued

OSAKA, Japan - The Finance Ministry's Mint Bureau announces Nov. 1 it will accept mail orders from Nov. 8 to 21 for 100,000 sets each containing a 10,000 yen gold coin and 500 yen nickel coin (in the photo). The coins commemorate the 10th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's reign. Also to be issued will be 100,000 sets each containing the 10,000 yen gold coin.

The pony, whose market price is worth 150 million yen, will be sold if there is an order after being displayed at the company's main store in the Ginza shopping district in Tokyo, and outlets in Nagoya, Fukuoka and Osaka.             TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows three types of 500-yen nickel brass coins to be issued by the Finance Ministry next spring to mark the 2002 World Cup soccer finals to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The 500-yen coins are the same size as those currently in circulation and will have a world map and players on the head and a soccer ball, the emblem and a symbol indicating the length of a game on the back.

              TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a misprinted 2,000-yen banknote. The Finance Ministry said July 21 some 9,000 of the newly issued 2,000-yen banknotes were misprinted but it has no plans to recall them because the misprint does not invalidate them. Some 5,000 of the misprinted bills have already been put in circulation through the Osaka branch of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), the central bank, the ministry said.

Police said June 22 they have caught two Myanmarese sailors for using the kyat coins to buy cigarettes and collect change from a vending machine in Osaka. The Myanmarese coin has a value of about 1 yen.

                    TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese Finance Ministry on Dec. 27 unveiled a new design for Japan's 500 yen coin in a bid to counter swindlers who put altered foreign coins of much less value in vending machines to obtain 500 yen coins or change. The coin's metal mixture is modified to change its electrical conductivity. The new design also includes latent images within the large zeros -- of the number 500 (Top) which can be seen when the coin is viewed from a lower angle and a dark straight line (Below) when viewed from an upper angle. The new coins will be issued next August.

                      TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows Hungarian forint coins recovered from vending machines in the Tokyo area. Police arrested two men Nov. 18 on suspicion of stealing 3,000 yen by placing these coins in a vending machine and operating the return-coin lever. The Hungarian coins worth about 22 yen each have been altered to make them the same size and weight as 500 yen coins.
