YOKOHAMA, Japan - The photo shows Kanagawa prefectural police headquarters in Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Kanagawa prefectural police have been rocked by a string of scandals. The police said Nov. 2 that a sergeant has been fired for suspected involvement in a hit-and-run in July. Moreover, the police hid several urine test results of a former Kanagawa police officer who tested positive for stimulant drugs in 1996, police sources said Nov. 2.

Yokohama man admits to killing ex-classmate over money

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Atsushi Yamaguchi (L), 20, from Yokohama, admitted Nov. 25 to killing a former school classmate earlier this week after having some money trouble with him, the police said. He was arrested the same day on suspicion of abandoning the murdered body of Tomu Negishi, 20, which was found Nov. 29 in a forest in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture. (Kyodo)

Body found in Miura cave confirmed Blackman's

TOKYO, Japan - The remains discovered on Feb. 9 in a cave in the city of Miura, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, are confirmed as those of Lucie Blackman (file photo), a 22-year-old British hostess who went missing last July, police say on Feb. 10. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said dental records were required to identify the decomposed remains.

Hair from alleged rapist's condo may be Blackman's

TOKYO, Japan - Police said Dec. 28 that hair found in a condominium belonging to alleged rapist Joji Obara may be that of Lucie Blackman (file photo), a 22-year-old British bar hostess who disappeared in July in Tokyo. DNA tests indicate that several strands of hair taken from a bathroom of the condominium owned by Obara in the seaside city of Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, were hers, the police said.

Giants pitcher Uehara unhurt in traffic accident

KAWASAKI, Japan - Photo shows the scene of a July 27 traffic accident, in Kawasaki's Nakahara Ward, involving Yomiuri Giants' star pitcher Koji Uehara. Uehara walked away unscathed, after a motorbike hit the side of his car. The owner of the bike, a 28-year-old male from Yokohama, suffered a broken leg and wrist. Police were questioning Uehara about the possibility that the second-year pitcher acted without due care and attention when he attempted a U-turn on a major road.

Kakuei Tanaka

Born on May 4, 1918 in Niigata Prefecture and died on Dec. 16, 1993. Tanaka became Japan's 40th prime minister in July 1972 at 54, the youngest prime minister since the end of World War II. Tanaka established diplomatic relations with China in September of that year. In December 1974, Tanaka was forced to resign due to his involvement in money scandals. In July 1976, he was arrested on suspicion of accepting 500 million yen in bribes from Lockheed Corp. of the U.S. for his help in selling TriStar aircraft to Japan. In October 1983, he was sentenced to four years in prison by the Tokyo District Court. Tanaka's political influence declined after he suffered a stroke in February 1985 which left him partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Photo was taken on Aug. 31, 1992.
