Former U.S. POW sues Japanese firm for forced labor

LOS ANGELES, United States - Harold Poole (R in first row), speaks in front of a Los Angeles court Dec. 7 after filing a lawsuit against Japanese firms under a new law that holds German and Japanese corporations responsible for their treatment of forced laborers during World War II. Poole, 80, a former U.S. soldier, was captured by Japanese forces in the Philippines and then transferred to Japan where he was forced to work at a factory run by Nippon Steel Corp. The launching of the suits was timed to coincide with the 58th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Sen. Orrin Hatch (L of Poole) announced his support for the action.
