Emperor happy about peaceful decade on 66th birthday
TOKYO, Japan - Emperor Akihito (L) turns 66 on Dec. 23 and expresses happiness that the 10 years of his reign have passed relatively peacefully. The emperor compared the first 10 years of his Heisei era to those of his late father Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, who took the throne in 1926, saying ''various violent incidents occurred'' in that period.
