Russian official claims Yeltsin resigned to maintain influence
MOSCOW, Russia - Top Russian official Gleb Pavlovskiy gives an interview Jan. 6 to Kyodo News, in which he claimed Boris Yeltsin's resignation as Russian president last week was a carefully planned scenario aimed at maintaining his political influence. Pavlovskiy, adviser to the director general of the Russian presidential office since 1996, said he and other select members of the Yeltsin administration had worked on the plan for more than a year.
