New 'barrier-free' lifts fixed at premier's residence
TOKYO - Wheelchair lifts have been fixed in two places at the prime minister's official residence in Tokyo. Photo shows Posts and Telecommunications Minister Eita Yashiro moving up on a test lift on Jan. 19 from the ground floor to the 2nd floor office of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi (R) by using a new Canadian-made, 17-meter-long lift on the spiral stairway. Yashiro, a former TV celebrity, has been confined to a wheelchair since his serious injury in a fall from a stage in 1973.
