Schmitt soars to 7th World Cup win of season+

SAPPORO, Japan - Defending World Cup champion Martin Schmitt of Germany continues his hot streak on Jan. 22 in Sapporo, northern Japan, as he wins the Sapporo ski jumping meet for his seventh victory on this season's World Cup circuit. Schmitt, second after a 125.5-meter leap on his first attempt, secured his third consecutive victory with the longest second-round jump of 118 meters in a swirling wind on the K-120 Okurayama hill, site of the 1972 Sapporo large hill competition.

Gottwald notches 4th win at Nordic combined Nayoro meet

NAYORO, Japan - Austria's Felix Gottwald in action on the K-86 normal hill in Nayoro, central Hokkaido, on March 1. Gottwald increased his lead in the World Cup Nordic combined standings by winning his fourth title of the season. The Austrian overcame a 1.8-point deficit after placing fifth in the 10-kilometer cross country leg by nailing jumps of 86 and 87.5 meters for third to finish on a winning total of 241.2 points.

Fukita wins UHB Cup

SAPPORO, Japan - Yukitaka Fukita, fresh off his TVh Cup victory Feb. 10, nails mammoth leaps of 137 and 138.5 meters to win the UHB Cup ski jumping meet Feb. 11 for his second title in as many days. Fukita collected a winning total of 287.4 points at the K-120 Okurayama hill in Sapporo for his fourth win in domestic meets this winter, making an impressive appeal for a place in Japan's World Cup team.

Harada wins domestic ski jump opener

NAYORO, Japan - Defending champion Masahiko Harada posts the longest jump of the day and won the abbreviated Nayoro meet to mark the opening of the domestic ski jumping competition Dec. 16. Harada, an Olympic and world bronze medalist, landed a jump of 83 meters in inclement weather on the K-86 normal hill in Nayoro, Hokkaido, to edge out national team teammate Hideharu Miyahira for the win.
