Widow angry at court ruling on Green Cross chiefs

OSAKA, Japan - A woman whose husband died after receiving HIV-tainted blood products from Green Cross Corp. in the 1980s (back to camera in foreground) speaks to reporters in Osaka on Feb. 24 after the Osaka District Court sentenced three former presidents of the pharmaceutical firm to jail terms ranging from 16 months to two years. The woman said, ''The court's sentence is one year less than the prosecutors demanded. I believe Green Cross killed my husband. I feel like crying, 'Give me back my husband'.''

Fukuoka court acquits woman of murder of brother, arson

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Mitsuko Katagishi, 60, of Fukuoka, who has been charged of killing her brother Shunichi Koga, 58, in 2004 and torching his house, speaks to reporters in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on March 5 after the Kokura branch of the Fukuoka District Court acquitted her of the murder and arson charges. Court upholds guilty verdict for health official over AIDS death

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Supreme Court said March 4 it has upheld a suspended prison sentence for Akihito Matsumura (file photo), a former senior health ministry official who was convicted for failing to prevent the use of HIV-contaminated blood products in the 1980s that resulted in the death of a patient. The court decision put an end to more than 11 years of criminal investigations and trials linked to the outbreak of HIV caused by the contaminated blood products. (Kyodo)

Prosecutors lose appeal in fatal drunken driving case

2.5-year jail term sought for ex-lawmaker Yamamoto

TOKYO, Japan - Joji Yamamoto, a former House of Representatives lawmaker and former member of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, walks into the Tokyo District Court on Dec. 26. Prosecutors demanded a prison sentence of two and a half years for Yamamoto who is charged with defrauding the government of some 25.5 million yen in public funds by falsely registering a 51-year-old woman as a government-paid secretary.
