Leap year glitch affects weather forecast system
TOKYO, Japan - Erroneous data were discovered Feb. 29 at 43 of some 1,300 regional meteorological observation sites in Japan, the result of a computer glitch stemming from an irregular leap year that occurs once every 400 years. The photo shows a computer screen indicating precipitation in Shikoku based on data provided by the Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System (AMeDAS) of the Meteorological Agency. It indicates high levels of rainfall in various parts of the island when there is actually no rainfall.
