Plaintiffs protest court's nixing of reactor closure demand

FUKUI, Japan - Members of a group of locals in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, who filed a lawsuit demanding the permanent closure of Japan's only prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor, display banners protesting a ruling by the Fukui District Court at the court's entrance March 22. The court rejected the plaintiffs' demand, saying it is unlikely that the Monju reactor in Tsuruga poses any visible danger to infringe upon their lives or health.

Miyazaki court rejects damages claim by Chinese forced laborers

MIYAZAKI, Japan - Plaintiffs and their supporters arrives at the Miyazaki District Court on March 26 to hear a ruling on their lawsuit. The court later rejected a damages suit filed by a group of Chinese who sought compensation from the state and a Tokyo company for being forced to work as laborers in Japan during World War II, in another loss by plaintiffs in a series of such lawsuits. Court rejects demand to stop enshrining Koreans at Yasukuni

TOKYO, Japan - South Korean plaintiffs head for the Tokyo District Court in Tokyo's Kasumigaseki district on May 25 to hear the court's ruling on their lawsuit filed against the state, demanding the state stop enshrining Korean war dead at Yasukuni Shrine and pay damages. The court rejected the claim filed by 414 plaintiffs -- 161 former South Korean soldiers and civilian personnel who served in the Japanese military as well as 253 bereaved family members of such soldiers. Nagano court dismisses damages suit over Chinese forced laborers

NAGANO, Japan - The Nagano District Court dismissed on March 10 a damages suit filed by a group of former Chinese laborers, and family members of those already deceased, who were forced to work under harsh conditions at a construction site in Nagano Prefecture during World War II. After rejecting the plaintiffs' demand for 140 million yen in compensation, Presiding Judge Jiro Tsuji took the unusual step of offering a personal observation, ''Preceding generations did some terrible things, and I wish I could offer (the plaintiffs) some relief.'' Ehime residents lose suit over gov't approval of nuke reactor

MATSUYAMA, Japan - A group of local residents walk into the Matsuyama District Court on Dec. 15 to hear the ruling on a lawsuit they filed to cancel the central government's 1977 approval of construction of a new reactor at Shikoku Electric Power Co.'s Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan. The residents lost the lawsuit.

FUKUI, Japan - The Fukui District Court on March 22 rejected a demand, filed by a group of local residents, for the permanent closure of Japan's only prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor, shown in this file photo. The court said it is unlikely that the Monju prototype reactor ''poses any visible danger to infringe upon the lives or health of the plaintiffs.'' State, road corp. ordered to cut car exhaust emissions

OSAKA, Japan - A group of plaintiffs visit the Construction Ministry's Kinki bureau in Osaka on Jan. 31 after they won a lawsuit over the reduction of vehicle exhaust emissions in the western Japan city of Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture. The Kobe District Court ordered the central government and Hanshin Expressway Public Corp. to reduce vehicle exhaust emissions in the city and pay 330 million yen in compensation to 50 residents of the city suffering from various respiratory illnesses caused by air pollution.
