Founder of Japan's tax system Shoup dies
TOKYO, Japan - Carl S. Shoup (shown in this file photo), a U.S. scholar who laid the basis of Japan's postwar tax system, died in New Hampshire on March 23, the Japanese Finance Ministry said March 28. He was 97. ''We owe the modernization of our tax system and the reconstruction and development of our economy in the postwar era to Dr. Shoup. We present our sympathy for him,'' the ministry said in a statement.
