Yoshiro Mori elected new LDP president
TOKYO, Japan - Yoshiro Mori, secretary general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), bows after being elected president of the LDP on April 5. He succeeds outgoing Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, who suffered a stroke and has been in a coma since April 2. The LDP, at a meeting of its Diet members held at party headquarters in Tokyo, elected Mori as president to pave the way for his expected election as prime minister in the Diet later in the day.
