Emperor, empress booed by demonstrators in The Hague
THE HAGUE, the Netherlands - Placard-carrying demonstrators demanding war reparations boo Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko as they arrive by limousine May 24 at the Binnenhof, the seat of the Dutch government. The emperor's Dutch visit marks the first trip to the Netherlands by a Japanese monarch in 29 years. In 1971, Emperor Akihito's father, the late Emperor Hirohito, received a harsh welcome during his visit to the country.
