Dispute over dumped waste on Teshima Island settled

TAKAMATSU, Japan - Kagawa Gov. Takeki Manabe (2nd from R) signs an agreement with residents of Teshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture on June 6 to settle a long-standing dispute over 500,000 tons of industrial waste that had been illegally dumped on the island. The group of people on the left represented the residents. Under the accord, proposed by a central government arbitration commission, the prefecture will set up a disposal facility on a nearby island by early 2003 and remove all the waste by the end of March 2017.

Currently, voting in the territory is restricted to indigenous Kanaks and those who arrived from France before 1998.                       110 tons of medical waste dumped in Hiroshima

                      HIROSHIMA, Japan - Plastic containers filled with infectious medical waste are left unattended inside the compound of an industrial waste incinerating facility in Hiroshima's Asakita Ward. About 110 tons of medical wastes packed into some 11,000 containers have been found inside the compound. The police say the medical waste, such as used syringes, blood transfusion tubes and medical masks, was collected by the Osaka-based garbage disposal company Kotoku from several medical institutions in Osaka Prefecture. Kotoku allegedly subcontracted -- without government approval -- the disposal to various garbage disposal operators in Tottori and Hiroshima prefectures and the medical waste ended up in the disposal facility.
