Company chief nabbed on suspicion of possessing fake cigarettes

TOKYO, Japan - The photo shows counterfeit cigarettes at Shinjuku Police Station on June 24, seized from a 58-year-old company president. Police arrested Fumio Sasai, head of real-estate company Yazaki Sangyo, on suspicion of possessing numerous packs of bogus Mild Seven Lights and Seven Stars cigarettes, brands sold by Japan Tobacco Inc.

          OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows Snow Brand Milk Products Co.'s plant in Taiki, Hokkaido. The plant former head Osamu Kubota is one of the nine company officials sent to prosecutors on March 16 on suspicion of professional negligence in the massive outbreak of food poisoning that hit western Japan last summer. Others include former Snow Brand President Tetsuro Ishikawa and former Senior Managing Director Hiroshi Soma. The powdered skim milk produced in Taiki was an ingredient in tainted dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt drinks made at Snow Brand's Osaka plant that led to widespread food poisoning in June and July last year.

                TOKYO, Japan - Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) has found at least 68 elaborately forged cigarette packs made to resemble two famous brands in Ibaraki, Saitama and Gunma prefectures. The photo, delivered by the Japanese tobacco monopoly in Tokyo on June 19, shows a genuine Mild Seven Lights package (L) and a forged one (R). The forged packs are almost identical to the genuine products except for subtle package distinctions, such as a missing bar code and a wrongly printed Chinese character, but the cigarettes taste very different.

                  NAGOYA, Japan - Photo shows fake Furby dolls which were seized by police in Aichi Prefecture on Nov. 15. Police arrested Isamu Yamazaki, president of Yamani company, which was selling the counterfeit toys, on suspicion of violating the copyright law. The Japanese-language version of Furby, which came from the United States, went on sale in Japan in May.
