Tests begin at 'mega-float' facility in Tokyo Bay

YOKOSUKA, Japan - A light plane takes off from a floating airport built in Tokyo Bay in a series of takeoff and landing tests that began July 5. The 1,000-meter-long ''mega-float'' facility has been developed by a group of four Japanese steelmakers and 13 shipbuilders.

JAL plane makes emergency landing after pressurization trouble

TOKUSHIMA, Japan - A Japan Airlines Airbus A300 is parked at Tokushima airport after making an emergency landing at the airport late July 23 after oxygen masks were deployed in the cabin due to a malfunction in the aircraft's pressurization equipment. 2 injured in crash landing in Ibaraki Pref.

Part of crashed H-2 rocket found

TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo shows a part of the engine pipes of Japan's satellite-bearing H-2 rocket that crashed after takeoff in mid-November. It was found Jan. 5 by a deep-sea probe machine on the Pacific seabed near the Ogasawara Islands. The object, which lies on the seabed 2,913 meters down, was photographed by the search machine ''Deep Toe'' from the mother ship Yokosuka, belonging to the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center.

Giant steel platform for floating airport appears off Yokosuka

YOKOSUKA, Japan - A giant 1,000-meter-long steel platform to be used in the construction of an experimental floating airport appears off Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, in Tokyo Bay on Aug. 4. A sheet, the last unit of six, arrived earlier in the day to be attached to the main platform.

Delta airliner runs aground at Narita airport

NARITA, Japan - A Delta Air Lines MD-11 bound for Atlanta has two flat tires shortly before takeoff and runs aground on the only runway of Narita airport July 17. The runway was temporarily closed for an emergency inspection.
