ASEAN will not discuss E. Timor membership: Surin
BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan (extreme R) meets with a delegation from East Timor, including (from L to R) independence leaders Jose Ramos-Horta and Xanana Gusmao as well as Sergio Vieira de Mello, the chief of the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), in Bangkok on July 24. He said the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will not discuss East Timor's membership in the group until the territory becomes a fully independent country.
