Toyota develops 80%-cut diesel emission system

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. announced on July 25 the development of a new diesel emission catalytic converter capable of 'dramatically' reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter in diesel exhaust. The conversion efficiency is greater than 80%, compared with the current 1998 regulation levels. The photo shows a cross-section of the new converter.

Toyota to present advanced eco-friendly vehicle at Tokyo Motor S

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity. It also features unusually smooth drive thanks to ''four-wheel independent drive control and large, steering angle mechanism,'' the carmaker said. (Kyodo)

Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said. Toyota to enter NASCAR truck race in 2004

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. will begin participating in 2004 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series by racing trucks based on its Tundra trucks (photo) manufactured at a plant in Indiana, the automaker said on Feb. 13. Toyota to launch car under WiLL brand next year

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. will launch a next-generation car as early as next year under the WiLL brand, a brand promoted by a variety of companies. The car will be equipped with a navigation system similar to the one featured in the WiLL VC, a car that Toyota launched at the Tokyo Motor Show in November. A console located left to the driver's wheel will connect to the G-Book, a network service that Toyota will start as early as next June, providing e-mail services and data such as maps and news reports. The console can also be used for downloading music, for karaoke and for making reservations at restaurants.

Toyota begins selling new midsize luxury sedan

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said June 4 it has begun selling the Brevis, which it calls an active-lifestyle luxury sedan. Available with either 3.0- or 2.5-liter direct fuel-injection VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) engines, the Brevis clears fuel-consumption standards due to go into effect in 2010 and reduces hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions to at least 25% below 2000 regulation levels.

Toyota markets hard-top convertible Soarer

NAGOYA, Japan - Photo shows a hard-top convertible version of Toyota Motor Corp.'s luxury Soarer passenger car the automaker has put on the Japanese market. Toyota said April 3 the four-seat coupe with an engine displacement of 4292 cc features an electrically powered aluminum top that can be stored in the trunk.

New Suzuki car unveiled

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a new car unveiled Jan. 23 by Suzuki Motor Corp. For every kilometer it travels, the five-door 1.5-liter Aerio produces 0.04 grams of hydrocarbons and 0.04 grams of nitrogen oxide. Both amounts are less than half what is allowed for new cars under Japan's emissions rules that went into effect in 2000.

Maglev train makes test run

NAGOYA, Japan - Shoichiro Toyoda (R), former President of Toyota Motor Corp. and now head of the organizing body for the planned 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture, and Kohei Abe (C), chairman of the Chubu Economic Federation, take a test run on a high-speed magnetically levitated train Oct. 12, as the project's promoters geared up efforts to have the system put into commercial use for the first time in the world. The promoters aim to have the high speed surface transport (HSST) train in operation for the planned world expo in Aichi Prefecture.
