Todaiji Temple's Buddha cleaned

NARA, Japan - Monks and other Buddhist followers clean a statue of the Buddha at Todaiji Temple in Nara, western Japan, on Aug. 7 in preparation of the Bon Festival that commemorates the spirits of the dead. Some 230 people took part in the annual ritual to clean the 15-meter-high statue.

The rite symbolizes the arrival of spring.
