Ethiopia's Abera wins Sydney Olympic men's marathon
SYDNEY, Australia - Ethiopia's Gezahgne Abera raises his hands before he breaks the tape to win the Olympic men's marathon at Sydney Olympic Stadium on Oct. 1. Abera pulled away from African rivals with three kilometers left, covering the 42.195 kilometers in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 11 seconds. Japan-based Kenyan runner and Atlanta Olympic bronze medalist Eric Wainaina got the silver, while Tesfaye Tola of Ethiopia took the bronze.
