High-speed, anti-spy patrol boat

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A high-speed, anti-spy patrol boat built by Hitachi Zosen Corp. for the Japan Coast Guard is launched in a ceremony at Hitachi's Kanagawa shipyard in Kawasaki, south of Tokyo, on Nov. 9. The 220-ton, 50-meter-long vessel with a top speed of more than 40 knots has been christened Tsurugi. It will be deployed in February at the Niigata Coast Guard office.

AOMORI, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard on April 7 recovered a body from a sunken scallop fishing boat in Mutsu Bay off Aomori Prefecture and another three bodies from the seabed around the vessel. Suspicion raised over apparent inaction by destroyer before collision

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Japan Coast Guard officials prepare to go on board the Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Atago berthed at the MSDF Yokosuka Base, south of Tokyo, on Feb. 21 for investigations into the Feb. 18 collision between the Aegis advanced defense system-equipped vessel and the fishing boat Seitoku Maru in the Pacific just off the coast of Chiba Prefecture.

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - Police officers check bullet holes in windows of the wheelhouse of the Amami, a Japan Coast Guard patrol boat, in Kagoshima on Dec. 24. The vessel arrived at Taniyama port in Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, Dec. 24 after being hit on Dec. 22 in the East China Sea by shots from a suspected North Korean spy ship, which sank after exchanging fire with Japanese patrol boats.

Whale found dead near Yokohama yacht harbor

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A dead whale floats in the sea June 2 in front of Yokohama's public yacht harbor, where it was found after initially been spotted bleeding May 30 by a Japan Coast Guard patrol boat. The 3.3-meter-long whale, which had collided with a leisure boat before disappearing, will be kept as a specimen at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.
