Coast Guard to introduce hybrid power for lighthouses in 2001

TOKYO - Mikomotojima Lighthouse overlooks the sea 10 kilometers south of Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture in this photo provided by the Japan Coast Guard Dec. 16. The Coast Guard will combine solar energy and wind power to generate electricity for four lighthouses, including Mikomotojima, spread out across Japan. The hybrid system, which it described as unique in the world, will be launched sometime next year.
