Hokkaido mayor protests planned U.S. navy vessel visit

TOMAKOMAI, Japan - Tadayuki Torikoshi, mayor of Tomakomai in western Hokkaido, has called on the U.S. Navy to reconsider its request that the U.S. naval vessel Blue Ridge be allowed to call at the port in February, saying the visit will inconvenience other commercial ships. File photo shows the 19,200-ton Blue Ridge. It was taken in October 1997 when the vessel entered Hakodate port in Hokkaido.
