German, China groups sign to build maglev in Shanghai
SHANGHAI, China - Chinese officials and representatives of a German consortium including Siemens AG sign a contract in Shanghai on Jan. 23 to build a magnetically levitated rail system between Shanghai's metropolitan center and the city's international airport by the beginning of 2003. The system, known as the Transrapid, allows trains to travel at speeds of up to 430 kilometers an hour.
