End of Cold War to affect Sapporo Snow Festival
SAPPORO, Feb. 3 Kyodo - Members of the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) build large snow statues in a park in central Sapporo for the Sapporo Snow Festival. The GSDF has helped out in organizing the festival since 1955 as part of its program of training and exercises. But a planned reduction in local GSDF personnel due to the end of the Cold War is likely to affect the future of the festival, which attracted over two million people last year.
