Blind, deaf academic to teach at Univ. of Tokyo
TOKYO, Japan - Satoshi Fukushima (L), 38, speaks at a news conference in Tokyo on Feb. 19 with his wife Sawami who is translating reporters' questions for him using finger reading. Fukushima, assistant professor of education at Kanazawa University in Ishikawa Prefecture, will become the first blind and deaf person to teach at the University of Tokyo, considered Japan's most prestigious university. He will take up a new post at the university's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.
