Hitachi Zosen, NKK to merge shipbuilding units

TOKYO, Japan - NKK Corp. President Yoichi Shimogaichi and Hitachi Zosen Corp. President Iso Minami shake hands at a news conference in Tokyo on Feb. 23. The two firms agreed to merge their shipbuilding operations into a fifty-fifty joint venture to be established Oct. 1, 2002 in a bid to survive in the increasingly competitive global market.
