Kyushu firm to mass-produce biotech toilets

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Handout photo shows a biotech portable toilet which Sunbio Co., a Kitakyushu-based company, will begin mass producing in May. Company officials said the toilet, priced at 342,000 yen, employs microorganisms to completely decompose human waste in two to three hours. The microorganisms inhabit wooden chips in the bowl area and decompose the organic materials of human waste into water and carbon dioxide. Intended mainly for the elderly with walking difficulties and for inpatients, the toilet will ease the burden of caregivers as the wooden chips need to be replaced only once a year, officials said.
