Baby hooded crane makes public debut at Osaka's Tennoji zoo

OSAKA, Japan - A baby hooded crane (L) makes its public debut at Tennoji Zoo in Osaka on May 29, hours after hatching in the nest of its foster parents, a pair of Japanese cranes. It is the first time in Japan that the egg of a hooded crane -- an endangered species known as ''nabezuru''(Grus monacha) -- has been incubated by a different kind of bird, in this case a Japanese crane (G. japonensis) known as ''tanchozuru.''

Hokkaido cranes to Taiwan

Red-crested white crane hatched in Toyama from egg laid elsewher

TOYAMA, Japan - A tiny red-crested white crane hatched at the Toyama Family Park municipal zoo in Toyama, Toyama Prefecture on May 27 from one of two fertilized eggs laid at the Hamura municipal zoo in Tokyo. According to Toyama Family Park officials, this is the third successful case of red-crested white crane hatching in Japan from eggs laid elsewhere. The Toyama park has been trying to hatch red-crested white cranes but none of the eggs laid at the zoo was fertilized, zoo officials say. The egg that hatched was laid in April and sent to Toyama on May 15. The photo shows a crane tending the newly-hatched chick inside the Toyama zoo. (Kyodo)

Public gets first look at baby hippopotamus born at Ueno zoo

TOKYO, Japan - A baby pygmy hippopotamus (L), born at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, makes its first public appearance on May 16. Born April 24, the female -- which weighed 11.5 kilograms as of May 6 -- is the offspring of an 11-year-old female named Ebony, which came from a U.S. zoo, and Showhei, aged 10, which hails from a zoo in Nagoya, central Japan.
