Toyota begins selling new midsize luxury sedan

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said June 4 it has begun selling the Brevis, which it calls an active-lifestyle luxury sedan. Available with either 3.0- or 2.5-liter direct fuel-injection VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) engines, the Brevis clears fuel-consumption standards due to go into effect in 2010 and reduces hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions to at least 25% below 2000 regulation levels.

M'bishi Motors to launch 100% ethanol car in Brazil

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on June 21 it will roll out the Pajero TR4 Flex, its first vehicle to run completely on ethanol, in Brazil in July, in an effort to establish a stronger presence in the fast-growing alternative fuel car market. Toyota unveils high-end Lexus luxury car

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. Vice President Kazuo Okamoto stands beside a Lexus luxury car brand's high-end model, the LS, at a press conference in Tokyo on April 26. The company plans to put the LS on sale as the successor to the Celsior in Japan in September. Toyota plans to launch a gasoline-fueled version powered by a 4.6-liter engine in September and a gasoline-electric hybrid version next spring. Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said. New Suzuki car unveiled

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a new car unveiled Jan. 23 by Suzuki Motor Corp. For every kilometer it travels, the five-door 1.5-liter Aerio produces 0.04 grams of hydrocarbons and 0.04 grams of nitrogen oxide. Both amounts are less than half what is allowed for new cars under Japan's emissions rules that went into effect in 2000.

Toyota develops 80%-cut diesel emission system

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. announced on July 25 the development of a new diesel emission catalytic converter capable of 'dramatically' reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter in diesel exhaust. The conversion efficiency is greater than 80%, compared with the current 1998 regulation levels. The photo shows a cross-section of the new converter.
