Evacuation area construction begins at JR Shin-Okubo Station

TOKYO, Japan - East Japan Railway Co. men begin work early on the morning of June 21 to construct emergency evacuation areas under the platforms of Shin-Okubo Station following an accident in January in which three people, including a South Korean student and a Japanese photographer, were killed.

Early-morning subway accident disrupts Tokyo commute

Extended Tohoku Shinkansen line to feature super deluxe cabins

TOKYO, Japan - An artist's impression of a super deluxe ''Green Car'' cabin of a new shinkansen super-express train that East Japan Railway Co. plans to introduce on the extended Tohoku Shinkansen line by the end of fiscal 2010. According to JR East, the super deluxe ''Green Car'' will seat up to 18 passengers and will boast the same level of comfort as a first-class cabin on an airliner. The new Tohoku Shinkansen line, to be extended to Shin-Aomori station in Aomori Prefecture, will allow a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour when in commercial operation. (Kyodo)

KDDI cellphones to be used to pay fares at JR East stations

TOKYO, Japan - A model demonstrates how a mobile phone handset is used to pay train fares at a press conference at a Tokyo hotel on July 11. Subscribers to KDDI Corp.'s ''au'' mobile phone service will be able to pay train fares with their handsets at East Japan Railway Co. stations starting in January 2006, the two companies said. JR East will allow its Suica electronic train fare card functions to be installed on Internet-capable mobile phone handsets for use with KDDI's EZ FeliCa service to be launched in September in combination with Sony Corp.'s FeliCa contactless integrated-circuit card technology. NAGAOKA, Japan - A Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo arrives at JR Nagaoka Station in Niigata Prefecture on Dec. 28 as East Japan Railway Co. resumed full services on the line.
