Honda to begin testing fuel-cell car on Japanese roads

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. will begin testing its fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX-V3, on public Japanese roads from mid-July to study its suitability for the domestic market. Honda said July 4 the tests will take place on a wide variety of routes, including freeways and city streets in Tochigi Prefecture and elsewhere, under a variety of traffic conditions.

                The construction cost was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be several percent higher than the usual cost of about 600 million yen. The station will produce hydrogen using city gas from a medium-pressure pipeline. Carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the process of mining and burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) is offset. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to have more than 100 fuel cell buses in use by the end of this year, and the Toyosu Hydrogen Station will be responsible for supplying hydrogen to the city's fuel cell buses. Takashi Anamizu, vice president of Tokyo Gas, said on the same day that he expects the station's operation rate to increase significantly.                     Fukuoka City, Tokyo R&D (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), and others have begun a joint demonstration of fuel cell trucks (photo). By increasing the size of the high-pressure hydrogen container, they will be able to extend the cruising range from the 2018 demonstration to 210 kilometers and run on expressways. The vehicle will be a modified diesel-powered two-ton truck, which was used for 55 days from October to December in 2006 to make deliveries in the central part of Fukuoka City, traveling about 30 kilometers a day. The hydrogen containers were increased from three 36-liter bottles to three 51-liter bottles, and the cruising range was increased from 150 kilometers to 210 kilometers.                       Toyota City has introduced Toyota's SORA fuel cell bus for public transportation.

                      On August 8, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, held a ceremony to unveil the newly introduced "SORA," a mass-produced fuel cell bus manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. This is the first time that the city has introduced this vehicle in the Chubu region. A total of three vehicles were leased, two of which will be used by the Toyota Oiden Bus, a community bus running in the city, starting in September, and one will be used as an official vehicle. One will be used as an official vehicle, and the other will be used as a power supply vehicle in the event of a disaster. The vehicle introduced is the improved SORA, which Toyota began selling in August, with a total length of 10525mm, width of 2490mm, height of 3350mm, and a maximum capacity of 79 passengers. Toyota's Deputy General Manager of General Affairs and Human Resources, Mr. Tadashi Kuwata, expressed his hope that many people will become familiar with the hydrogen society.
