Valli claims 1st gold at swimming world c'ships
FUKUOKA, Japan - Italy's Viola Valli celebrates after winning the women's 5-kilometer open water final July 16 to clinch the first gold medal at the ninth swimming world championships that opened the same day in Fukuoka. Valli pulled into a 30-meter lead with 1 km to go before crossing the finish line at Momochihama Beach in 1 hour, 23 seconds.
