Okinawa citizens protest U.S. military presence following rape

URASOE, Japan - Residents in Urasoe, Okinawa Prefecture, tie about 100,000 handkerchiefs decorated with antimilitary messages to fences surrounding a local U.S. military base on July 20 in protest at the recent rape of an Okinawa woman allegedly by a U.S. serviceman. About 100 protesters tied the handkerchiefs, sent from several parts of Japan and blazoned with messages such as ''No to the bases!,'' ''Never tolerate violence against women'' and ''Peace'' to fences surrounding the U.S. Marine Corps' Makiminato Service Area, a 2,750,000-square-meter storage facility.
