EU asks Japan to promote competition in telecom market

TOKYO, Oct. 23 Kyodo - Shinichi Kitajima (L), Director-General of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Economic Bureau, and Fernando Valenzuela, Deputy Director-General for External Relations of the European Commission, shake hands at the Foreign Ministry on Oct. 23 after swapping notes listing each other's deregulation demand. The European Union called on Japan to set up an independent regulatory body to promote competition in its telecommunications market.

New carriers, U.S. join hands in opposing NTT's fee hike plan

TOKYO, Japan - Officials from new Japanese common carriers sit together with consumers as well as U.S. government officials at a symposium held in Tokyo on March 4 to oppose the telecommunications ministry's plan to let Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) raise the interconnection fees it charges to other carriers to access its phone lines. Jessica Webster, first secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, told the meeting that the planned fee hike would wipe out benefits from increased competition in Japan's telecom market. (Kyodo)

Kin ask Foreign Ministry to look into case of Terakoshi trio

TOKYO, Japan - Akio Terakoshi (R), son of Shoji Terakoshi who went missing at sea with his nephew Takeshi and brother Sotoo in 1963, gives Akitaka Saiki, deputy director general of the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, a written statement at the ministry Oct. 11 asking the ministry to investigate how the three disappeared and how Shoji and Sotoo died, reportedly in the North.
