Kin of heart transplant recipient thank U.S. military for help

GUSHIKAWA, Japan - The father (L) and sister of Shingo Arasaki, a 19-year-old from Okinawa Prefecture who underwent a heart transplant in the United States on Oct. 11, thank the top U.S. military commander in Okinawa on Oct. 24 for help in realizing the operation. Susumu and Asami Arasaki met Lt. Gen. Wallace Gregson (R) at Camp Courtney in Gushikawa. The U.S. military raised $63,000 for the operation and travel expenses.

                      KYOTO, Japan - Kim Ire (file photo), the 2-year-old South Korean boy diagnosed with myelogenous leukemia and the focus of various fund-raising activities in Japan and South Korea, died Oct. 28 at a hospital in Seoul. The boy was diagnosed in April and was scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant by July, but the operation was canceled after his condition deteriorated.
