Osaka schools reinstate beef in lunches after mad cow scare

OSAKA, Japan - Pupils at Sekimehigashi Primary School in Osaka's Joto Ward eat school lunches using ground beef on Oct. 30. Fifty-two public primary schools in Osaka reinstated beef into school lunches after keeping it off the menus for about a month following confirmation of the first case of mad cow disease in Japan.

Food Safety Commission OKs easing of all-cow testing for BSE

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's independent Food Safety Commission is in session in Tokyo on May 6 on the issue of the country's import ban on American beef. The panel approved an easing of the blanket testing of all cows for mad cow disease, paving the way for lifting the ban imposed after the December 2003 discovery of the first U.S. case of mad cow disease.

Panel to agree in March to exclude young cows from mad cow tests

TOKYO, Japan - The Prion Research Committee of the Food Safety Commission, a government panel in charge of mad cow disease, is in session in Tokyo on March 11. Yasuhiro Yoshikawa, chairman of the committee, indicated after the session that his panel may reach a conclusion later in the mmonth that young cows aged up to 20 months can be excluded from tests for mad cow disease, clearing one of hurdles to lift a 15-month-old ban on U.S. beef imports to Japan.

Japan's 1st case of human mad cow disease confirmed

TOKYO, Japan - Health ministry experts confirmed in an emergency meeting Japan's first case of the human variant of mad cow disease in a Japanese man who died in December. The ministry suspects the patient in his 50s was infected with the variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in Britain where he had stayed for about a month in around 1989. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - Two health ministry officials tells a press conference in Tokyo on Feb. 21 that a dairy cow from Kanagawa Prefecture is highly likely to have been infected with mad cow disease. Confirmation is expected when the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare hears opinions from experts on Feb. 22 after the case was found in the process of the government-led initiative to test all cows for human consumption for the disease. If confirmed, it would raise the number of cows infected with the disease in Japan to 10.

Beef dish disappears from fast-food chain in Japan

OSAKA, Japan - An outlet of Osaka-based fast-food chain Nakau Co. in Yodogawa Ward informs customers of the removal of a popular beef dish from the menu on Feb. 2. Nakau removed the dish at almost all its outlets across Japan the same day as it has run out of beef inventories under Japan's ban on beef imports from the United States due to mad cow disease there.

9th cow in Japan with BSE heads for incinerator

TOKYO, Japan - Parts of a slaughtered 21-month-old bullock in Hiroshima Prefecture, which was confirmed as having bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) on Nov. 4, are carried away for incineration at a slaughterhouse in Fukuyama in the prefecture on Nov. 5. It was Japan's ninth case of mad cow disease.

Tokyo wholesale market launches meat safety campaign

TOKYO, Japan - People crowd a ''meat fair'' which Tokyo's central wholesale market launched in Minato Ward on Oct. 19 to promote its campaign to persuade consumers about the safety of beef and pork. Japan's food industry was hammered by the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), mad cow disease, in the country in September 2001.
