Statue names mixed up for 350 years at Miyagi Pref. temple

SENDAI, Japan - Photo shows 17th-century wooden statues of head priests at the Zuiganji temple in the town of Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture -- the statues of Hosshin (L) and Ungo. Their names were mixed up for nearly 350 years until 1999. Hosshin was the temple's head priest in the 13th century and Ungo was a 17th-century head priest, who in 1636 oversaw the temple's restoration to its present form.

                KASHIHARA, Japan - Charred pieces of what may be the oldest colored wall painting in Japan have been excavated from the remains of what is believed to be the original monastery of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, a local board of education said on Dec. 1. The biggest of the fragments (top left) measures 5 cm by 4 cm. It is the first time for wall painting fragments to be excavated from the monastery, said to have been built in 607 by Prince Shotoku (574-622) in the town of Ikaruga and destroyed by fire 63 years later.

                    American Zen priest promotes Jizo project for Hiroshima, Nagasak

                    KYOTO, Japan - Jan Chozen Bays (R), an American Zen master, speaks with reporters at a Kyoto hotel on Aug. 4. She called for people to join a project to make some 270,000 statues and written images of Jizo Bodhisattva to represent the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and promote world peace. Bays said she came up with the idea when she visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki two years ago. Jizo Bodhisattva is the guardian of deceased children, expectant mothers, firemen, travelers, and pilgrims.                       KYOTO, Japan - Seihan Mori, chief priest of Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto, paints the Chinese character, or kanji, for ''tiger,'' at the temple on Dec. 12. The character was chosen as the kanji symbol of the year in an annual poll conducted by a Kyoto-based association. It was chosen because the Central League baseball club Hanshin Tigers has bolstered public sentiment by winning the league pennant for the first time in 18 years. (Kyodo)
