Kitora tomb mural paintings filmed

ASUAKA VILLAGE, Japan - Mural paintings inside the chamber of the Kitora tomb in the village of Asuka in Nara Prefecture depict stars in gold foil. The paintings that date back from the late seventh century to early eighth century were filmed with a digital camera through the grave robbers' tunnel and projected on a television monitor Dec. 6.

KASHIHARA, Japan -Photo taken on Dec. 1 shows the remains (bottom right) of what is believed to be the original monastery of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, where about 30 charred pieces of what may be the oldest colored wall painting in Japan have been excavated. Paintings in ancient Kitora tomb remain intact

KASHIHARA, Japan - Photo released Jan. 27 by the Culture Agency shows one of paintings on the walls of the stone chamber of the ancient Kitora tomb in Asuka, Nara Prefecture. Researchers investigating the tomb, which dates from the late seventh to early eighth centuries, said the paintings in the stone chamber remain intact in comparison with their condition after a probe in 2001. One of Japan's oldest Buddha statues found in Otsu

OTSU, Japan - The Nara National Museum says Aug. 3 it has found inside a principal statue at Ishiyama Temple in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, four small Buddha statues overlaid with gold. They were made between the seventh and eighth centuries, covering Japan's Asuka, Hakuho and Nara periods. One of the four (far R) is judged to have been made in the Asuka era and is believed to be one of the oldest Buddha statues made in Japan, together with those at Asuka Temple and Horyuji Temple. Farm ministers inspect rice paddy farming in Japan

NARA, Japan - Japanese agriculture minister Tsutomu Takebe (L) and his counterparts from Australia, Canada, the European Union and the United States visit the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture, on a half-day trip on July 26, where rice paddy farming has roots from ancient times.

Filming of ancient Nara tomb begins

ASUAKA VILLAGE, Japan - An aerial photo shows the Kitora tomb in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture, where researchers began filming the inside of the ancient tomb's chamber Dec. 6, 2001. Researchers want to get information for use in restoration work set to begin in 2003 on the tomb's mural paintings that date back from the late seventh century to early eighth century.
